Longarm is a seldom seen, original specimen of the Model 1808 flintlock musket. Undated, this arm was government contracted through the State of Connecticut for service in the War of 1812. Based on the Harpers Ferry Pattern and never converted to cap and ball, the musket likely saw service for the State militia in the War of 1812.
Flintlock is a large .71 or .72 caliber, single shot smoothbore muzzleloader that retains its original parts in good condition. Lockplate front is slightly raised above the stock flat while it exhibits the teat at the left edge. Undated, the plain lockplate face bears a “spreadwinged eagle motif” over small “U S” within an oval. Both eagle and the U.S. are heavily worn. Lock has no maker or date behind the cock.
Flat sided hammer is plain and still retains its original flint in the jaw. All gunmetal wears a dark gray patina with rust pitting and oxidation overall. Barrel breech has Connecticut state proofmarks on the left side which show “US” / “eaglehead over CT” (all within a recessed oval) / “V”. Musket has a 44½” long round barrel secured to the black walnut stock by three iron bands. Barrel wears a dark mottled plum patina overall and touch hole is heavily pitted from use.
Cock, battery (frizzen), battery springs, pan, and screws are original and in strong condition. Musket retains its sling swivel at the trigger guard and also at middle barrel band. Mechanics are crisp and strong. 11 ½” long iron triggerguard with finial ends. Bore is dark with moderate pitting.
The dark, uncleaned, untouched black walnut stock is in good original condition overall with just normal dings and dents accumulated with service and age. Stock flat has a fine, off-lock side, state cartouche of a “V / CV” all within a clover leaf outline. Stock wrist area behind the hammer does have a missing 1” long x ¼” wide, wood sliver at plate edge. Iron sideplate dark with one screw slightly buggered. Original button-head ramrod has the threaded tip filed down and sharpened to a point. Has lug underneath barrel muzzle tip for the bayonet.
A seldom seen, unaltered M1808 Connecticut contract flintlock musket for the War of 1812.
