Shotgun meas. approx. 49.00 inches in overall length. The side by side barrels are approx.33.75 inches long. One barrel measures .20 gauge while the other measures .28. Barrel is decorated with a floral design at breech. Barrels are connected by a recessed strip with a bead sight at center near the muzzle. Barrel surfaces are semi-bright with moderate mottling throughout. The bore on both barrels are dark and dirty. There are no visible markings.
Both locks are slightly raised with points at rear. All lock parts are of iron and look original. Each frizzen is straight and each “S” shaped hammer has a flint. Action on both works well. Right hammer holds at half-cock, left does not. Locks are semi-bright on their surface and are unmarked.
Walnut stock has minor chips and scratches consistent with age. It has a moderate raised comb with cheek rest. Brass buttplate is very ornate with pointed, slender ends with chased floral decoration while each side of the plate has three scrolls with a linear decoration. The face of the plate is heavily nicked. Wrist has an oval mother-of-pearl escutcheon. Stock is cracked on either side of the barrel tang. One side is repaired with a tack while the other side is missing a sliver of wood. Large inlaid brass triggerguard has an extended forward tang with an urn shape while the actual triggerguard is very wide and displays a fan or feathered embellishment. The rear tang of the guard is plain along most of its length and then raises to form a finger rest. This raised area is also decorated with an engraved floral pattern. After the raised area the tang continues to form a smaller inlaid urn pattern much like the front tang. Attached in this area is an iron sling swivel.
The forearm has a large inlaid brass pipe to accept the wooden ramrod with trumpet head tip. Two smaller iron pipes are attached on the underside of the barrel to guide the ramrod to the pipe. The lower of the two iron pipes has the second sling swivel mounted to it. One iron shim holds the barrel to the stock.
A very attractive looking early shotgun. [ad]
