The Lorenz rifle-musket was second to the British Enfield in total numbers of longarms imported. It was a single-shot, percussion muzzle loader. Total length 52½” long.
Barrel length 37½” long, bored out to .58 caliber. Part octagon, part round barrel secured to stock with three iron bands and three band springs, all marked with assembly numbers, proof and inspector stamps. Bore has four-groove rifling with scattered pitting.
Barrel has the graduated long-range, rectangular folding rear sight and a blade front sight with bayonet lug. Top flat of barrel breech shows the maker, private contractor, “CARL HEISER”. Barrel left facet exhibits several stampings.
All gun metal clean and exhibiting a pewter color. Beveled lockplate is dated “861” (1861) under the bolster and has the Austrian eagle stamped behind the hammer. Mechanics are strong and crisp.
Sideplate marked with assembly number. Original ramrod is of the cupped variant with brass band and retains its threaded tip.
Stock is brown walnut with usual dings and scuffs from age and use. Stock has no raised cheek-piece.
