All metal surfaces on this weapon wear a dark, almost black patina throughout.
The round barrel is .69 and meas. approx. 44.50 inches in length. The dark surface is smooth except for an area of light surface rust and pinprick pitting just behind the forward barrel band. There is no rear sight and the brass blade front sight is mounted on the rear most band of the forward double barrel band. Bayonet lug is present below the muzzle. Left side of the breech is stamped with a “V” over a recessed circle with an eaglehead over “CT.” The smooth bore is dark but has only light surface dirt.
The lockplate has a rounded front with a pointed rear and is beveled all the way round. Hammer is flat with a cutout below the jaws. A flint with a reproduction lead pad is present. Top jaw vice screw has hole for tightening with a tool. Flashpan is iron with a rear fence. Frizzen operates properly and shows signs of light use. Action is stiff but works properly. Hammer and frizzen have light surface rust. There are no markings visible forward of the hammer but arranged behind it in two vertical lines is “J. HENRY” over “PHILA.” All screw heads on the lock are very good.
Full stock shows light wear and dirt from age. It is also dark in appearance. There are no cracks visible. Right side of the butt is boldly stamped “DELAWARE” while the side opposite the lock is faintly stamped “WESTPHALL.” In the area of this latter stamp is the lock escutcheon which has two screw heads that show light wear. Forward of the triggerguard are scratched the initials “TH.”
Buttplate, barrel bands and triggerguard are all present and match the rest of the iron on the weapon. Rear swivel is mounted just forward of the bow in the triggerguard while the middle band holds the other swivel. Ramrod is a bit tight but is complete with the button head on one end and threads on the other. [ad]
