An original Springfield Model 1842 smoothbore .69 caliber musket in good condition. All metal surfaces have been cleaned and are bright.
Barrel surface is very clean. There is a slight bit of pitting in the area of the breech. Proofmarks of “V / P” and eaglehead are strong as is the barrel date of “1845.” Musket also retains its brass blade front sight on the upper barrel band. Bayonet lug is present below the muzzle. Bore is also very clean.
Lock has a very nice spreadwinged eagle stamped over small “US” forward of the hammer and a crisp “SPRING / FIELD / 1845” in a stacked, three-line arrangement back of the hammer. Nipple is original. Mechanics are strong and work properly.
Black walnut stock is in good untouched condition. Wood is dark but does exhibit several dings, dents and scratches. There is a small closed crack forward of the lock. It is less than 0.50 an inch long. There is also an old chip at rear of the barrel tang. The left side of the butt has an old gouge that meas. approx. 0.50 inch x 0.50 inch. The flat opposite the lock has two visible inspector’s cartouches.
There is a crisp “US” stamped on the butt plate tang. Musket retains its original trumpet type steel ramrod with flat head and threaded tip. Both sling swivels are present. Triggerguard and barrel bands match the rest of the metal. Screw heads show very little wear. [ad]
