This is a Model 1861 rifle musket made under contract by William Mason, in Taunton, Massachusetts.
All gun metal on this rifle is smooth with matching bright surface. Barrel shows light pitting and wear around the breech and bolster. The date “1864” is barely discernable on the top of the breech. Proof marks “V / P / eagle head” are on upper left facet of the breech with back half of eagle head worn away. Barrel bore is clear with very light oxidation and strong rifling.
Lock plate is nicely marked “US / WM MASON / TAUNTON”. Spread-winged eagle is faint. Behind the hammer is the date, “1864”. The 40” long barrel has the two-leaf rear sight and small blade front sight.
Screw heads are in good shape. Butt plate bears the “US” on the tang and unit mark “B / 16”. Mechanics are crisp and strong. Retains its original barrel bands, sling swivels, etc. which are all in good condition. Ramrod is a reproduction.
Black walnut full stock is in very good condition overall with only one chip missing behind nose cap. Stock has no cartouches on the flat. Wood retains beautiful original color and finish.
A nice M-1861 rifle musket. [jet]
