Original Springfield military long arm produced circa 1871-1872 with the unique ‘rolling block’ configuration and action. The ‘rolling block’ rifle employed an interlocking system of hammer and breech that was deemed one of the strongest actions of its time.

Chambered for a rimfire .50/70 caliber cartridge, the rifle exhibits the large action with a high spur hammer and a projecting ear-like lever on the right side of breech block. The 36” round barrel is secured to the black walnut stock via two barrel bands with barrel retaining springs. A long-range, full folding rear sight rests atop the barrel breech. Barrel is mostly bright. Bore is clean with good rifling. Remington markings and patent dates appear in two lines on tang behind hammer. Strongly stamped on right side of receiver is “[eagle] / US / SPRINGFIELD / 1872” while “MODEL 1871” is on the left side.

Stock has its original finish and shows a few dings and wear from age and use. Stock is in solid with no cracks or repairs. Initials “J.H.L.” are carved into shoulder stock and what looks like “1910” is carved near nose cap. An inspector’s cartouche is clearly visible on the shoulder stock.

Mechanics are strong. Rifle has both sling swivels and “US” stamped butt plate. Original ramrod has its ribbed, slotted head but threaded end has been removed.

This is a very nice Rolling Block rifle in .50-70 caliber.  [jet]
