MODEL 1863 BRIDESBURG CONTRACT MUSKET, DATED 1864

$2,795.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 218-563

This Model 1863, .58 caliber, percussion rifle-musket is dated 1864 and is in very good condition. Produced at the Alfred Jenks & Co facility in Bridesburg, PA.

The 40” long barrel is overall bright with smooth surface. Top of breech stamped “1864”. Left side has “VP” and standard eagle head as well as small inspector’s initials. Flat side of bolster has small eagle stamp. Bore is bright and clean with strong rifling; excellent! Has blade sight/bayonet lug at muzzle and two-leaf, flip up sight at breech.

Lock plate is stamped “U. S. / BRIDESBURG” in front of the hammer and strongly stamped “1864” behind hammer. A spread-winged eagle motif is stamped on lockplate between hammer and bolster. Mechanics are crisp and strong.

This type musket was produced without barrel band springs. The three screw-tightened barrel bands are correct and in place; all stamped with “U”. Retains its original steel, straight-shank ramrod. Butt plate boldly stamped “US”.  Barrel, lockplate, hammer, butt plate, bands, trigger guard, rear sight, and ramrod all share the same clean finish.

Black walnut full stock is in good condition overall. Stock exhibits one faint government cartouche. The usual tiny dings and dents from use and storage. Retains its steelhank, tulip-head steel ramrod with a threaded tip, all in excellent condition.

A fine example of the Bridesburg contract musket of the Civil War.  [jet]
