Here is an original, 1863-dated Model 1861 .58 caliber “Trenton Contract” percussion rifle-musket in excellent condition overall.

The weapon was a product of the Trenton Locomotive and Machine Company, Trenton, New Jersey circa 1863-64. Firm had a contract with the government and it produced some 11,500 muskets for the army during the Civil War.

The wood shows an attractive color and surface, with nice, edges and a visible N.J. on the offside flat. There are a few small dings, dents and scuffs that are visible from normal use. The spot that shows the heaviest wear is near the front band on the rear side. The metal was lightly cleaned, keeping the musket in the bright, as they were issued, and preserving the markings.

Lockplate is stamped with a deep clear “U.S./TRENTON” under the bolster and “1863” stamped behind the hammer. The mechanics are crisp and strong.

Barrel breech area has a deep stamped “1863” on the top flat with sharp government proof marks “V/P / eagle head” on the left facet. Side facet of the barrel is strongly stamped with letter “N.J.” Breech area near the nipple and bolster area has no pitting which is consistent with the rest of the metal. The bore is in near mint condition.

All barrel bands, sling swivels, band springs and trigger assembly are original. This musket retrains its original tulip-head, swelled shank, steel ramrod with its threaded tip. Butt plate is marked with a US on the tang. Screw heads are in great condition.

This musket is an original Model 1861 “Trenton” and would be a nice addition to any Civil War collection.  [kn] [ph:L]
