ALLIN CONVERSION MODEL 1865 TRAPDOOR RIFLE

$2,795.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 490-1835

This rifle is the first model of the Allin conversion trapdoor. The breech loading “Trapdoor” mechanism, designed by Erskine S. Allin of the Springfield Armory was adopted in 1865 and 5000 model 1861 rifle-muskets were converted to this system. This rifle fired a .58 caliber rimfire cartridge.

The 40” long barrel has the flip-up rear sight (brazed in place during conversion) and small blade front sight. Round barrel shows no surface pitting and wears a smooth pewter/light gray patina. The breech was cut out and replaced with the Allin trapdoor mechanism. On the barrel breech only the “65” remains of the date on top and only the eaglehead is left on the proofmarks on the left side. Bore is clean and bright with strong rifling. The Allin breech piece that has been added is in fine condition retaining some original blue color. This component still operates smoothly and with crisp “rack and pinion” type action.

The metallic components -- barrel, barrel bands, ram rod, trigger guard and butt plate – all exhibit very nice matching color and condition. The lock plate still shows signs of case hardening. Lock action is strong. A spread-winged eagle motif is stamped on lockplate in front of the hammer. Near that is clearly stamped, “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD”.  Behind the hammer is the date, “1865”.

Black walnut stock is in very good condition overall. Stock exhibits no inspector cartouche. There are no cracks and the usual light dings and dents from age and storage. Wood retains attractive original color and finish.

A beautiful transition rifle. [jet] [ph:L]
