This original German longarm is a .72 caliber, Potsdam Model 1809 smoothbore musket in good condition. Musket measures a total length of almost 56.25” with a 41.25” long barrel and has been converted from flint to percussion by having a curved bolster and nipple forged on to the breech.

Barrel surface is dark with light pitting at the breech. Bolster and original nipple show some light surface rust. Left facet marked “1835” above a crown and “FW.” Rear sight is a raised notch screwed to the barrel tang. Barrel is secured to the stock via three brass bands retained by springs. Upper band is double-strapped and mounts the front sight. Bayonet attaches by Laukart mechanism. Bore is very dirty and needs cleaned.

The lock plate surface is semi-bright with a curved tail that terminates into a small point that differentiates it from the later 1839 model. Markings are found forward of the hammer and consist of a badly worn Prussian crown over a worn and indecipherable mark. Action works well.

Brass trigger guard is missing its iron sling swivel while the one on the center band is also missing. All brass wears a dark patina. Finials of the trigger guard and the toe of the buttplate terminate in distinct three-pointed ends.

Black walnut stock with its recessed cheek piece is in very good condition. Wood surface is very good and free of any major dings or dents.  Right butt cheek is stamped with a good crown over a worn letter “F” and a strong “W.” Left flat is stamped with a crisp “S” in a circle. This same area also has a small “W.”

Original ramrod is full length with a trumpet head with dimple in the face and threads on the opposite end. [ad] [ph:L]
