Breech (near tang) is stamped with serial number, receiver stamped “US / MODEL / 1884” (this was not changed for the M1888), left side of barrel stamped with proofs, eagle head, and with two additional inspector letter stamps. Blade sight is at the muzzle and a flip-up long-range sight with windage adjustments is at breech end. Sight correctly marked “R” for rifle. Bore is clear and bright with rifling.

Stock is in solid condition with some dings and dents associated with use and storage. Large cartouche with initials and date (1892) on left side of stock. Large script “P” in circle stamped on underside behind trigger guard tang. “74 REG’T” stamped into wood on left side near breech and underside near butt. “572” stamped on top of comb. “74” and “572” are nicely carved into the right side of the butt stock .

Overall, a very fine example of the Model 1888 trapdoor rifle.   [jet] [ph:L]
