An early full stock curly maple fowler with a “LONDON/ WARRENTED” marked lock. The lock is lightly hand engraved with a single border and flowery decoration near the tail. The hammer is also lightly engraved. The frizzen-spring is roller-bearing equipped, that allowed the action to run smoother. The overall length is 45 1/2” with a 30 ½’ barrel. No visible markings on the barrel. Held in place by two round iron pins. Rear buckhorn sight and brass blade front, situated about 2” from the muzzle. Octagon barrel at the breech, changing to faceted for a short section, a single wedding band decoration and then round the remainder.

The stock is nicely figured curly maple with a dark reddish color. Brass butt plate, trigger guard and ramrod thimbles. Nice curl decoration on the iron trigger tip. Not equipped with a nose cap or patch box and the ramrod is now missing. A plain brass side plate, with two piercings, holding two lock screws.

This fowler appears to be in its original configuration and was most likely made to order for a child or female customer. No cracks in the stock or noticeable dents, only the usual handling marks from usage. The screws are all in good shape and show no signs of recent work. The metal surfaces all show a nice dark uncleaned patina. No history is known with the gun although, the right-side butt shows the outline of some sort of rectangle tag. It appears to have been a paper label glued on at one time. Whatever it said has been lost to the hands of time.

A good example of a curly maple flintlock fowler from the first half of the 19th century.  [stp][ph:L]
