Cal. 58 “Watertown” produced by Charles B. Hoard and made in Watertown, New York, total quantity 12,800. The lock surface is a dusky gray finish. Markings “EAGLE” and” U.S. / WATERTOWN and the date “1863”are very sharp. Crisp working lockwork. All other iron surfaces are a dusky gunmetal gray patina. The barrel is marked “VP / EAGLE but the date is not visible. Bore has good rifling and has a semi-bright finish. The stock is a dark walnut and in very good condition. It is marked with a cartouche and C. B. Hoard on the left side. The rear sight is complete and functional. The ramrod is not an original. Overall this is a very fine example of the ‘Watertown” contract rifle – musket.
