This original longarm is a Harper’s Ferry Model 1842, .69 caliber single-shot muzzleloader in complete condition. The musket’s lock surface is dusky light gray and exhibits a mild peppery look from scattered fine rust pitting. Lock markings are the standard “Spreadwinged Eagle / US” forward of the hammer and “HARPERS / FERRY / 1851” in a three-line stacked arrangement back of the hammer. Mechanics feel strong and crisp. All gunmetal surfaces have been cleaned and wear a light mottled gray patina with a mild sheen. Proof marks “V / P/ Eaglehead” are clear. Barrel breech also exhibits the small letters “A R / P” of the Harpers Ferry armory. Date on the barrel tang worn away. Bore is clean but does exhibit scattered areas of dusty light pitting. All the other iron components are consistent in patina and color. Retains both upper and lower sling swivels, one at the triggerguard and second at the middle barrel band. No government cartouche visible on the stock flat. A clear “US” stamped onto the buttplate tang. No other markings visible save for a partial remnant of sub-inspector stamp on bottom of triggerguard. Walnut stock is in fine condition, untouched and free of cracks or repairs. Just normal dings and gouges visible overall. Original ‘trumpet’ type steel ramrod in place. Screws not buggered up. A great M1842 Harper’s Ferry Arsenal smoothbore musket dated 1851 that would enhance any longarm collection.
