This 12mm Lefaucheux revolver is almost complete except for the loading door, ejector rod and front site.
The action is frozen but the hammer, cylinder, trigger and triggerguard with finger spur are present. Cylinder has a small hole in one side. All metal surfaces are dark and heavily pitted. Wood grips have shrunk a slight bit but are complete. Lanyard ring on butt is also present. There are no markings visible.
This relic from Gettysburg’s East Cavalry Field resided for years in the collection of the W. F. Templeton Post #120 of the GAR in Washington, Pennsylvania. It passed to the collection of the late Lou Mastracci of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and comes to us from his family.
It is known that the only Union regiment to carry this revolver in the cavalry fight of July 3rd was Company A of the Purnell Legion of Maryland Cavalry who took 110 of them into the fight (see page 53 of “CIVIL WAR PISTOLS OF THE UNION” by John D. McAulay.) It is also known that Confederates used this revolver as well.
This is a nice solid relic of the Battle of Gettysburg with a GAR connection.
