Made by Edward Woodward. This piece consists of a flat wooden base measuring 6 ½” x 2 ¾’ x 1”. The items mounted on the base are early battlefield pick-ups. The shell fragment on the left has a star, and the words, “NATONAL CEMETERY GETTYSBURG 1863” engraved in script. There is an iron eagle mounted in the wood fragment in the center. The wood and bullets were recovered from Culp’s Hill and Round Top. One spot is empty as can be seen in the photographs. Iron is in good condition with no flaking. Wood stand shows normal wear.
During the Civil War, Woodward was a Baltimore-based gunsmith who, after visiting the Gettysburg battlefield, decided to move there and set up shop. Along with gunsmithing, Woodward began producing relic desk sets such as this one, from 1885 through the turn of the century. A highly attractive & desirable vintage Gettysburg relic. [SM]
