This dark blue silk pennant has an orange wool felt border. It features “SEMI-CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION OF THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG, JUNE 29- JULY 6 1913, GETTYSBURG, PA” in stenciled lettering with images of General Ulysses S. Grant and General Robert E. Lee. This was commonly done on Gettysburg souvenirs, as General Grant was the commanding General of the Union Army at the time of the surrender, although General George Gordon Meade was the commander of the Army of the Potomac at the Battle of Gettysburg. Above these images are two hands shaking, symbolizing the reunification of the country. Measures 12” high x 32” long. Pennant is in very good condition with just two tiny holes on the left side, and one on the right of the blue silk where it was nailed to display. There is one very small tear above the “R” in “GETTYSBURG”. Color of felt has lightly faded with age.
This is a nice, vintage Gettysburg collectible. It is rare to find items marked from the 50th anniversary. A pennant just like this was on display at the Lee’s Headquarters Museum, which is now closed. [sm]

Old habits die hard. Although we now know production of the new pattern cavalry saber intended to replace the heavy Model 1840 started in 1857, most still refer to them as the Model 1860. This is a scarce example of one produced by Ames in 1859 and… (2022-718). Learn More »
