Wood cane meas. approx. 33.50 inches long with a silver cap and inlaid Corps badges for the Union Corps present at Gettysburg.

The very top of the cane has a round silver cap that has light tarnish around the sides and is engraved on the top with the initials “GRL” in German script. Below this the wood is carved into a disc with slanted line decoration and an octagon base. This is followed by a fluted cylinder approx. 1.75 inches long.

This upper portion of the cane sits atop a hollow elongated square approx. 9.00 inches long. This hollow square is divided into an upper and lower section the upper section has a single carved wooden ball that moves back and forth within the square while the longer lower portion has five. The exterior of the upper square is decorated with a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th Corps badge done in darker wood and inlaid. Badges meas. approx. 0.50 to 0.75 inches in width. The top exterior of the lower square is decorated with a 6th, 11th and 12th Corps insignia and a decorative rectangle. These are done of the same wood as the Corps badges and are also inlaid.

The bottom portion of the cane has a tapering octagon shape with a 2.00 inch section of carved horizontal lines followed by a 1.00 inch rounded section with deep close vertical lines followed by another octagon section 2.25 inches long repeating the horizontal line theme. This in turn is followed by an elongated round section with deep vertical lines and is followed by two more sections repeating the same decoration until the cane ends in a narrow tip that is missing its finial.

Cane wears its original finish and has not been touched since.  There is some light wear but no cracks. Very nice condition overall.  [AD]
