Here is a wonderful photograph of the Gettysburg battlefield looking to the south from the observation tower at Ziegler’s Grove. Recorded in 1909 before the Pennsylvania Memorial was constructed. The framed image measures 38” x 14” overall.  Original narrow, plaster coated, wood frame shows some minor chips and scuffs.  Image is under glass and backed by cardboard. Image was recorded from the observation tower that once stood in Ziegler’s Grove providing an good elevated view of the battlefield. That tower was removed to prepare for construction of the Cyclorama, which has also since been torn down.  The scene is a beautiful view of the battlefield topography, monuments, and avenues. Webb and Meade Avenues, both long since removed, are visible in this view. A prominent landmark seen on the left side of image, is an extremely tall flag pole at the Lydia Leister house.  Captioned at bottom of image is “Copyright 1909 / Haines Photo Co. / Conneaut, O.”  Nice clear image with good contrast.  [jet]
