In 1913 a large camp was built to house the veterans attending the reunion marking the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. The camp’s western boundary was West Confederate Ave. The McMillan house was near the center of this western boundary and it was from the roof of the McMillan barn that this image was taken. From West Confederate Ave the camp stretched to its eastern boundary along the Emmitsburg Road. North to south the camp went from the edge of the town of Gettysburg, near the present day Recreation Park, to an area just north of the Codori Farm on the Emmitsburg Road. What we offer for sale here is a panoramic photo of this camp.

The photo is framed, matted and meas. approx. 56.00 x 13.00 inches. The actual image size is 50.00 x 7.50 inches. The black and white image is very clear with good contrast. The entire camp is seen. In the foreground there is a tree at the head of a row of tents. Under magnification you can see a sign nailed to the tree that reads “MINNESOTA.”

Visible along the left edge of the photo is the town of Gettysburg. The College buildings and the Adams County Courthouse are clearly visible and help give the viewer his bearings.

In the middle distance is Cemetery Hill with the New York Monument and the Soldier’s National Monument, both in the National Cemetery, clearly visible.

The Bryan Farm and the top of the Pennsylvania Monument on Cemetery Ridge can also be seen in the right middle distance while far to the right are the Round Tops.

In the middle distance is a railroad line with a wonderful steam engine and 9 passenger cars.

This image was taken by Frank Edwards of Huntingdon, PA and is so marked in the lower left section of the photo. The main caption reads “GETTYSBURG CAMP 50th ANNIVERSARY JULY-1913.”

The condition of this image is very good to excellent.  [ad]
