This book not only traces the early history of Adams County, but also provides many colorful photographs of historic markers, tombstones, as well as homes and barns of the recipients of awards from Historic Gettysburg-Adams County who have demonstrated their passion for architectural preservation. The author describes the architectural features of each house or barn and gives ethnic and historical explanations that help to identify the dwelling’s heritage. The awardee dwellings in this book exemplify the preservation efforts of the members of Historic Gettysburg Adams County (HGAC).
The message of this work is to assert that the history and identity of Adams County is its early farm life. It was this tranquil farm life that was changed forever by the seminal Battle of Gettysburg that visited a peaceful farming culture in the summer of 1863.
