CDV image is a seated view of former Captain Edward Corbin Pierce of the 3rd Maine Infantry. Pierce is wearing a dark civilian suit jacket and vest with light shirt and trousers. Pinned to his right breast is a ribbon with a 6th Corps badge suspended from it (it has been suggested to us that the medal is actually a Kearny Cross; it may well be but we’ve not found any supporting evidence to confirm that he was awarded either the Kearny Medal or Kearny Cross).

Image is clear with good contrast.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for C. D. FREDRICKS & CO of New York and Paris. Reverse also bears a very nice period ink inscription that reads “E. C. PIERCE, CAPT. 3D MAINE AND A.G.O. 6TH CORPS.”

Also with the image is a typed label that reads “CAPT. EDWARD C. PIERCE 3RD MAINE INFANTRY, SIGNAL OFFICER IN THE ‘LITTLE ROUND TOP’ SIGNAL STATION, AT GETTYSBURG.”

Edward Corbin Pierce was born January 30, 1836 in Nashua, New Hampshire. He enlisted as a Corporal in Company F, 10th Massachusetts Infantry at Springfield on May 31, 1861. At the time he gave his occupation as an ornamenter.

Pierce served with the 10th for about four months before being discharged for promotion to 2nd Lieutenant in Company B of the 3rd Maine Infantry.

Sometime in late 1861 Pierce was assigned or joined the Signal Corps. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on April 6, 1862 and Captain on December 22, 1862.

Pierce was present for the campaigns of the Army of the Potomac and during the Antietam campaign his image was captured in an Alexander Gardner photograph of the Elk Mountain Signal Station where the then Lieutenant Pierce can be seen sitting on top of the signal platform.

During the battle of Gettysburg Pierce and his signal crew operated on Little Round Top. Records seem to show him there on July 3rd.

Pierce remained in the Signal Corps throughout his service and was discharged at the expiration of his term of service on June 28, 1864.

He died at Roxbury, Massachusetts on March 24, 1896 and is buried there in Holyhood Cemetery.  [ad]
