On June 30, 1863 during its approach march to Gettysburg, the Union 2nd Corps camped at Taneytown, Maryland. Over the years this camp has yielded many relics including the button offered here.

Three-piece button in good condition. The face has a light green patina showing it was dug in a fertilized field. There are no pushes or cracks. Eagle and state shield are visible as is the word “EXCELSIOR.”

Reverse has the shank and a faint “EXTRA QUALITY” mark.  [ad]
