On June 30, 1863 during its approach march to Gettysburg, the Union 2nd Corps camped at Taneytown, Maryland. Over the years this camp has yielded many relics including the button offered here.

Three-piece button in good condition. The face retains much of its gilt with small areas of discoloration. There is a push in the right side of the face. Eagle and state shield are clearly visible as is the word “EXCELSIOR.”

Reverse has a good shank with small amounts of debris caked around it. There does not appear to be any back mark.  [ad]
