On June 30, 1863 during its approach march to Gettysburg, the Union 2nd Corps camped at Taneytown, Maryland. Over the years this camp has yielded many relics including the button offered here.

Three-piece button in very nice condition as the face retains most of its original gilt. There are no cracks or dents. Eagle and state shield are clearly visible as is the word “EXCELSIOR.”

Reverse has a good shank with some surface discoloration. There is no back mark.  [ad]
