This heart-shaped souvenir badge was made for sale at the 1913 Gettysburg anniversary proceedings. This was a four-day commemoration attended by something over 50,000 veterans, among whom were about 8,000 former Confederate soldiers, with many staying at the “Great Camp,” which included a “Great Tent,” seating some 13,000, and its own temporary post office. Scores of politicians and other dignitaries attended, including President Wilson. Each day had a different focus: veteran’s day, military day, civic day, and national day, with various ceremonies, gatherings and speeches, including numerous regimental reunions. The anniversary concluded on July 4 with the dedication of the Pennsylvania State Memorial and a five minute period of silence.

This badge has a pinback top bar reading “souvenir” and emphasizes the theme of reconciliation with a heart shaped drop showing a pair of clasped hands over a U.S. and C.S. flag with the words “50th Anniversary / Gettysburg / 1913” above and below. Ribbons are affixed to the back of the badge, apparently to display a black ribbon flanked by yellow ribbons at top and bottom.  [sr] [ph:L]
