This is one of the nicest and most interesting souvenir desk sets we have seen. The wood base meas. approx. 8.00 inches long by 3.00 inches wide x 0.75 of an inch thick. The front edge is decorated with nicely carved crosshatching. The relics decorating the item begin with a 2.00 x 1.50 inch shell fragment engraved “CEMETERY HILL.” Next is a 2.25-inch section of a bayonet tip. At center is a wonderful piece of wood with a dropped minie ball placed in it. Mounted on top of the minie is a carved brass eagle from a M1826 cartridge box sling plate. This piece of wood is flanked by two small stones, one is light and the other is dark.
The most interesting piece is at front center. This is a Gardiner explosive bullet! Half the bullet is broken away revealing the un-detonated center. Also across the front are three fired bullets. One has been flattened, one has mushroomed and the other is just a piece of a bullet. The end is anchored by a large canister ball engraved “GETTYSBURG 1863.” The backside of the wood base contains just a very small piece of the original paper label. The wear and age on this item is truly wonderful.
