Offered here is a very interesting excavated relic. This is the pewter spout and tin spout collar from a Union soldier’s canteen.
Hand carved into the pewter is “R.E. Richards Co. C / 125 Ill”. Pewter and tin show dirt and rust as expected from any “dug” relic.
Richard E. Richards, lived in Danville, Illinois and was a 29-year old farmer when he enlisted on August 14, 1862, in Company C, of the 125th Illinois Infantry. He was promoted to sergeant at some point and was wounded at an unrecorded location. He was discharged for his wounds on March 18, 1865.
The 125th Illinois Infantry was organized at Danville, Illinois, and mustered in for three years service on September 3, 1862, under the command of Colonel Oscar Fitzalan Harmon. The regiment was attached to the Army of the Ohio, until November 1862. Then to the XIV Corps, Army of the Cumberland to June 1863; Reserve Corps, Army of the Cumberland, to October 1863; XIV Corps, Army of the Cumberland and Army of Georgia, to June 1865. The 125th Illinois mustered out of service on June 9, 1865. They participated in the following battles and campaigns: Battle of Perryville, Battle of Chickamauga, Siege of Chattanooga, Battle of Missionary Ridge, Atlanta Campaign, Battle of Resaca, Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, Siege of Atlanta, Battle of Jonesboro, Sherman's March to the Sea, Carolinas Campaign, and Battle of Bentonville.
