John S. Mosby Inscribed and Notated Presentation Copy of Mosby's Rangers, presented by the Confederate cavalry commander to his daughter. Mosby has inscribed on the front free endpaper, "To my darling daughter - May Campbell - from John S. Mosby," ca. 1896. The Gray Ghost, upon further inspection, noticed an error by the author on page twenty-four. When he wrote the book, James J. Williamson mistakenly stated that after the Civil War, President Grant had appointed Mosby "Consul to Kong Kong." In the right margin, Mosby corrected the error with a notation in black ink that reads, "I was appointed by President Hayes. / J. S. M-." Williamson served under Mosby in Company A of the Confederate 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry, also known as Mosby's Rangers. His history of the battalion-Mosby's Rangers: A Record of the Operations of the Forty-Third Battalion Virginia Cavalry from Its Organization to the Surrender-was published in New York in 1896. Light blue leather binding with some wear; some restoration and wear to the hinges.

From his daughter, May, the book passed into the hands of the Winmill family of Warrenton, VA. At some point, the Winmill and Campbell families had been joined by marriage. A bookplate from later owner, E. W. Winmill, is found on the front paste-down. Mr. Winmill also penciled his signature on the front free endpaper under Mosby's signature. The book came to the current owner after it was purchased directly from the Winmill estate.  [ph:L]
