The sword is accompanied by a yellowed, handwritten identifying card which reads: “Col. Arthur Williams carried in Philippines — laid aside in Samar 1902-3 (1899-1909) (?) (3d, 26th & 15th Infy) / This sword was bent nearly a right angle on causing [by entanglement of scabbard in underbrush] a fall of A.W. It was an encumbrance.”
The sword blade has been bent back nearly straight, but with a bit of a bow, three inches above the guard. Blade is worn, and exhibits a few patches of light pitting. Washer missing. Hilt assembly is tight and symmetrical, displaying medium coppery patina. Nickled scabbard exhibits patches of light pitting. Gilt drag, two carrying mounts, and throat, displaying medium-bright patina. Leather carrying straps attached, w/brass hook.
French made binoculars, with maker-mark “Lemaire Fabt./ Paris” stamped on eye-piece. Brass with leatherette covering. Measures 5.5” in length, with lens 2” in circumference. Leatherette covering lightly scuffed, with one light tear near eyepiece. Brown leather case scuffed with mild cracking & broken finial strap. Replacement carrying strap. Else good plus.
Arthur Williams was a Pennsylvania native who began his military career in 1874 and retired in 1913 as a full colonel. In 1917 Williams was recalled to service to supervise the construction of the War Prison Barracks at Fort Douglas, Utah. He was Commandant of War Prison Barrack Three from May to September 1917. He retired to Los Angeles after this service and died at age 85 in Los Angeles.
An intriguing grouping from the Philippine insurrection. Invites further research.
