This is a Model 1860 Staff and Field sword sold by M.C Lilley & Co. in Columbus Ohio. According to the Directory of American Military Goods Dealers and Makers, M. C. Lilley moved into the military goods business around 1874. The name was changed to The M.C.Lilley Co. in 1882 so this sword was made sometime between 1874 and 1882.
The blade is 30 inches long and 9/16 on an inch wide with a spear point. The obverse side has a military motif, a US and another motif with crossed cannons. The reverse is a US flag, eagle with a E. Pluribus Unum ribbon and crossed cannons. Signs of a gold wash are still present on the blade. The guard, pommel knuckle bow and quillon are all finely cast brass. The counter guard has a hinged side and both sides are decorated with an American eagle. The grip is made of cast metal that is made to look like it is sharkskin. The wire wrap is brass.
The scabbard is plated with decorative brass throat, rings and drag. The top mount has two small rings and the bottom mount has one ring. Engraved on the scabbard is "Presented by Co I / Capt J H Yuckley / 2nd Ark Vol Inf." Yuckley resigned from the 2nd Ark in 1898.
