Good condition, framed military register for Company H of the 1st Regiment, New York Dragoons. Originally the regiment was mustered into service on August 19, 1862 in Portage, New York under the 130th New York Volunteers. They were converted into a mounted regiment on July 28, 1863 with the designation of 19th Regiment of Cavalry. It wouldn’t be until September of that year that they were changed to 1st Regiment, New York Dragoons. The men were recruited from Alleganey, Livingston, and Wyoming Counties in New York and enlisted into service for 3 years.
Under the distinction of the 130th and 19th regiments, they partook in campaigns in Suffolk and Blackwater, Virginia. As the 1st Dragoons they conducted recon missions through Thoroughfare Gap into Pleasant Valley and onto Manassas Junction in 1863. They moved with Grant in his campaign of 1864 engaging in Fort Wilderness, Cold Harbor, and Trevilian Station. They were also with Sheridan through the Shenandoah Valley ending at Appomattox.
This register has scenes of war and peace on either side of a crested American shield flag with an eagle perched atop. Below the shield is a cavalry scene with an image of soldiers at camp to the left, and a woman dreaming of the return of her soldier to the right. There are three columns, two listing enlisted men and the center detailing the unit’s officers.
The bottom section lists the unit’s engagements, a brief poem, and when they mustered into service. There are scenes of a soldier’s reunion at home as well.
It retains the original gold gilt and wood frame with plexiglass. The frame measures 20 ¾” by 26”. There are a few nicks and scrapes along the edges from use. Along the top right edge there is a 1 ½” sliver of wood missing. On reverse is a wooden panel measuring 17” by 22 ½” that secures the image and matting in place. There are also two original hooks and wiring to hang the frame. [MK] [PH:L]
