“WAR OF 1861” IDENTIFICATION DISK OF 9TH NEW HAMPSHIRE SOLDIER

$950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 2023-233

This is a brass identification disk (“dog tag”), one of several styles that could be purchased by soldier from sutlers and other private sources. This “War of 1861” style very much resembles a Liberty Head $10 gold coin on one side because it features a spread-winged eagle. The other side was left blank so a soldier’s name and other information could be stamped.

This disk is clearly stamped, “S. KENISON / CO. D / 9TH / REGT. / N.H.V. / CONWAY.” Disk is in very fine condition.

Seth Kennison (with two “n”) was born in Conway, New Hampshire in 1821. When he enlisted in June of 1862 he was 41 years old.  Kennison was a Private in Company D, 9th New Hampshire Infantry. He participated in all the regiments many battles until he was wounded around Petersburg on July 14, 1864. He was discharged for disability on May 27, 1865. He died in 1906 and is buried in Center Conway Cemetery in Conway, NH.

The 9th was a very active regiment being engaged in the following:
Battle of South Mountain, Battle of Antietam, Battle of Fredericksburg, Siege of Vicksburg, Battle of the Wilderness, Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, Battle of Totopotomoy Creek, Battle of Cold Harbor, Siege of Petersburg, Battle of the Crater, Battle of Boydton Plank Road, and Appomattox Campaign.   [jet] [ph:L]
