Here is a Civil War soldier’s pocket-sized calendar that consists of four small pages and two, thicker outer cover pages of thin, natural ivory, all hinged at one end with a single rivet or pin. Pages are pivoted together at one end and each page measures 1 5/8” high x 3¼” wide. Visible at the top of each of the four inner pages are the stamped days of the week including Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Black ink has faded. Ivory pages for Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday are missing.
Top cover has a ½” high, silver shield device pinned to the exterior surface along with a silver clasp and hinged hook pinned at the upper edge of the diary. Thinly inscribed on the shield’s surface is the name “V W / Cheever / Anne Harbour / Mich”. Hinge area on the outer covers has a silver reinforcing bar pinned to the opposite cover. Daily entries were made upon the appropriate flat hard slabs of ivory, usually with a lead pencil. A number of penciled in inscriptions still are visible but slightly smudged on the diary pages. A nice, personal Civil War era ivory calendar artifact.
