Douglas CDV back-mark: “Published by E. Anthony, 501 Broadway, N.Y.”; Mrs. Douglas backmark: “F A”.
The frock-coated Sen. Douglas is posed in well-known frontal pose, and his wife his appears in an equally well-known lithographic bust pose. The senator’s image is crisp & clear with miniscule scratched spot in upper corners; Adele Douglas’ image has clipped corners, & slightly worn framing lines. Otherwise, CDVs are VG plus.
Douglas was the prominent Illinois Senator who debated Abraham Lincoln in the famous slavery debates of 1858, and later the Democratic Party nominee against Lincoln in the 1860 presidential election. The young and attractive Adele Cutts Douglas was the grand niece of Dolly Madison. She married the Senator in 1856 at age twenty, and bore him two sons before his death in 1861.
Stephen & Adele Douglas were one of the prominent “power” couples of the late 1850s Washington scene. Fine political collectible.
