Three-quarter seated view of John Meins of Company C, 144th New York Infantry. Meins is shown wearing a dark frock coat with light trousers. On his frock coat are 2nd Lieutenant shoulder straps and on his chest is a Gilmore medal that was awarded to men of General Quincy Gillmore’s command who performed acts of heroism in the Charleston area. Image is good and clear with good contrast. Mount and image are clean. Reverse has period ink inscription that reads “JOHN C. MEIN, 2nd LIEUT. Co. “C” 144TH NY VOL.” Photographers imprint is “WHITNEY & PARADISE… NEW YORK.” Reverse also has a green 3 cent tax stamp.
John C. Meins was born in New York State in March of 1843. He was 21 years old when he enlisted as a Sergeant in Co. C, 144th New York at Meridith on August 11, 1862. He made 1st Sergeant on February 4, 1864 and 2nd Lieutenant on November 15, 1864. He was discharged on May 23, 1865. After the war he lived in Dalles, Oregon where he is now buried. What he did to win the Gilmore medal is not known.
