CDV of Private Ezra Chapman of the 18th New York Battery. He is shown seated in a high-backed chair with his forage cap on his lap. He wears a dark Artillery shell jacket with matching dark trousers. The image is clear with great contrast. The paper and mount have some light surface dirt. Bottom front of mount is marked “MONROE, 33 MAIN STREET, ROCHESTER.” There appears to be some small amounts of ink on the chest of the subject.

The reverse of the image has the soldier’s name imprinted with an ink stencil. The surface of the back is worn and some of the stenciling is missing. It reads “E. K. CHAPM…” There is also some collector’s information in pencil along the bottom edge.

Ezra K. Chapman was born in Norwalk, Connecticut about 1821 or 1822. He was a 40 year old farmer living in Rochester, New York when he enlisted as a Private in the 18th New York Light Battery on September 13, 1862. He is described as being 5’8” tall with a dark complexion and black eyes. Private Chapman went with his battery to Louisiana where they were assigned to Sherman’s Division, Department of the Gulf from December of 1862 to April of 1863 when they were assigned to the 2nd Division of the 19th Corps. It was at this time that Private Chapman became sick and entered the Marine Hospital at New Orleans. He was discharged for disability on May 13, 1863 and returned to New York where he resided till his death. He filed for and received a Pension and in 1899 he was admitted to the Soldier’s Home in Bath, New York. At that time he was 76 years old and a widower.  Chapman disappears after that so where and when he died is not known.
