This anymore is rarer than the kepi itself but common in its day. Displayed in two museums. The last was the Texas Civil War Museum owned and operated by Mr. R. Richey. The owner of this practical necessity was Private Marshall Ambler Moncure, who on March 3, 1862, mustered into Company B of the 9th Virginia Cavalry CSA for 3 years or the end of the war. Wounded badly in the hand June 24th, 1863, in one of the dozens of skirmishes that the 9th Virginia was involved in screening Lee's Pennsylvania invasion force he never re-joined his regiment but was kept on their rolls. The oil cloth cover looks like a kepi itself complete with a vizor. Placed over the kepi or forage cap the bill of the actual cap was sandwiched into the peak of this cover thereby effectively holding it fast in place. All hand sewn the cover retains about 70% of its original black water-proofing finish.

Moncure in 1868 founded the Eagle Museum on Raceland Plantation in Dinwiddie Virginia. In 1933 it closed its doors and this cover, there displayed along with other 9th Virginia an Moncure memorabilia reverted to the family. This cover was put up for auction in 2010 by R.M. Spiers the great grandson of Private Marshall Ambler Moncure. A certificate of authenticity signed by Mr. Spiers passes with the cover. On a scale of 1 to 10 in Civil War headgear rarity this is a 10!   [pe][ph:L]
