This is the standard issue double bag knapsack made out of painted canvas. This one is in decent condition and nearly complete.
The body has two separations along one side the lower bag has a horizontal split approx. 4.00 inches long while the upper bag has a split approx. 3.00 inches long. These are narrow and only show because the item has been stuffed with newspaper to keep its shape. There are several other stress separations at the upper back and near one of the roller buckles at bottom but these are slight.
The back of the knapsack has all three closure straps. They are a little dry and show some surface wear but are complete. The bottom edge has two of the three roller buckles used for anchoring the closure straps. This area also has the larger roller buckle for adjusting the shoulder strap as well as the large brass hook for attaching the other shoulder strap.
The back of the item has both of the shoulder straps. These are solid but are slightly dry with some surface crazing. Both shoulder straps are full length with just the tip of one missing. They both also have the leather cross straps with brass “J” hooks. The left strap attaches to the large roller buckle at bottom while the right strap has a brass triangle that connects to the brass hook at bottom. The top of the pack has the four leather keepers for the blanket roll straps which, as usual, are not present.
The interior of the item is in good condition. Of the two interior bags one uses four flaps as closures. These flaps are complete with roller buckles and straps. The other bag has a single flap with two leather ties. The ties have long since rotted away.
These knapsacks are often encountered in horrible condition due to the fragile nature of the painted canvas bodies but this one has survived the years quite well.
