One of the rarest pieces of federal equipment is the tarred canvas haversack. These bags carried the infantryman’s precious treasures of coffee, bacon, hardtack, vegetables, and personal items. This specimen is whole and solid and displays very well. It measures approximately 13” deep x 11” wide. It has the tin buttons inside the bag as well as the closing tab and roller buckle on the outside. Complete with sling which is approx. 38” long. All stitching is tight and secure. There are two small spots where the flap folds over that are thin and show some separation, otherwise all of the tarred canvas is supple and strong. This specimen also has its original muslin rice bag on the inside. This bag is in especially good condition with only minor staining. Written in period pen on rice bag is: “Havre sack 1864-1865.” A solid and rare example of the regulation haversack in wonderful condition.
