This type of spade was the typical digging tool of the era.  Used to dig graves and earthworks.  Excavated examples of the iron blade portion were once commonly found in earthworks around Richmond and Petersburg.  This item measures approximately 37 ½” long overall with the blade being 7 ¼” wide. The wood portion is complete but with cracks and splits to the D-shaped handle. A period repair made with nails is found on one side of the handle.  The iron blade is in decent condition showing wear from use and surface pitting but no active rust.  The two step plates remain firmly attached to the top edge of the blade. These were added to protect the digger’s foot and boot from damage during the constant action of stepping on the shovel to force it into the soil. These are very typical of Civil War-era spades and are often missing. A nice example of Civil War entrenching tool.   [jet]

Extra shipping required due to dimensions, in one of carbine/sword boxes: $45.00 insured UPS east of the Mississippi, $60.00 West of the Mississippi.
