Maker plate: “Horstmann Bros. & Co. Philadelphia/ Army & Navy Goods.” 1879 pattern, brass, 13.5” in length (w/original mouthpiece), 3.5” bell diameter, outer collar (1.75” width), double coil. The piece exhibits a dark coppery patina; also moderate dings and dents along the upper horn. Significant inner coil dents near the rear, long ago bolstered w/now yellowing medical tape. The instrument does sound, but is scarcely playable. Collectors should be aware that this M1879 piece fills the evolutionary gap between Civil War bugles and the 1892 model, which would become the standard WWI & Boy Scout bugle. Fine display piece, exudes considerable character. Scarce. [jp]
