Circa 1840, this eagle head saddle pommel would have been used on officer’s saddles during the Mexican American War. Later, the accoutrement could be repurposed and used for the pommel on a cane, umbrella handle, and/or a knife. The eagle is brass cut and measures from head to base 3”, beak to eyeball 1 ½”, and the base is 1 ¼” round. There are clear markings of feathers down the sides. Four holes are affixed at the bottom so the pommel head can fit on a saddle pommel swell. There are clear notches, indicating wear, under the beak and down the front of the piece. [MK] [ph:m]
