Nice stamped brass oval “rope border” CS plate with a mostly clean face that has nice details to the stamping. Both letters are sharp and the beads of the rope are very visible. There is some light surface dirt throughout and minor dents along the edges. The reverse was not lead filled like its Union counterpart. The tongue and both hooks are made of scrap brass and are firmly soldered in place.
Plate is attached to a heavily used bridle leather belt that meas. approx. 2.00 inches wide. Leather is supple but worn with a good bit of surface finish loss. Two holes with slits are cut in the belt to attach the plate. One of the holes has split but has been repaired. Though worn the belt is complete.
According to author Steve Mullinax in his book “CONFEDERATE BELT BUCKLES & PLATES” a considerable quantity of these plates were issued to the Army of Tennessee beginning in 1862.
