This original, Confederate waist belt accoutrement is a spectacular and seldom-seen non-dug specimen of a desirable, rectangular, brass ‘frame’ buckle. The excellent original condition buckle recently surfaced at a Baltimore estate sale.  Constructed in the sand-cast mold process, this CS accoutrement is the larger size buckle with an unusual thicker center bar that retains its original, single sliding forked-tongue. Buckle is in very fine shape with no bends or breaks.   It exhibits a smooth hard finish with a dark mottled bronze / ochre patina overall. Inner edges of the outer frame still show the casting roughness never filed off prior to issue to the soldier. This is a sturdily constructed buckle that absorbed the rigors of hard field use. A fine brass specimen, this buckle measures 3 5/8” long x 2½” wide and has no maker’s mark visible.  Highly desirable, this rarely seen non-dug type of a Confederate ‘sliding forked tongue frame buckle’ is in excellent condition. It would enhance any Confederate collection or American military belt plate display.
