This Civil War artifact is a pleasing example of an original, Confederate wooden drum canteen. As with many wood drum canteens produced during the war, this circular specimen appears to be made of cedar or cherry wood and measures 7¼” in diameter by 2½” wide. Typical of the canteens carried by many Southern soldiers during the Civil War, this ‘Johnny’ canteen represented a very important element of the soldier’s field equipment.
Tight, well-constructed and strong, the piece bears a very faint partial identification on the face. Cannot make out the light carvings. This accoutrement retains both circular, 3/8” wide, iron bands that encompass the canteen’s outer edges and act as clamps. Each band is overlapped and held in place with a single small iron rivet. Equal distance apart on the exterior, 2¼” width of the canteen are three, brass sling loops set into grooves cut into the wood slats. At one time, these loops secured a carrying sling, now missing.
Canteen exhibits a ¾” wide, circular opening for the wooden stopper which is missing. Exterior of the canteen wears a dark, almost pockmarked, rough finish overall while its brass furniture exhibits a dark brown coloring. Canteen, with no breaks, cracks or loose parts, has accumulated just surface dirt and grime in the recessed areas. This attractive wooden drum canteen would make a fine opportunity for the collector to acquire an original Confederate canteen at a most reasonable price.
