Item Code: 217-236

This Civil War period artifact is a fine original example of a very rare and unusual double-spout tin canteen. The all metal accoutrement features dual, but separate interior compartments s container constructed in a crescent-shaped style. Canteen measures approximately 7½” long x 6” wide x 3” thick. Top portion of the canteen features two pewter spouts (missing the cork stoppers). Not known if this might be a Medical Department canteen.

The tin accoutrement is covered with a three-panel, heavy, dark gray/green cloth material machine stitched at the top, bottom and center. Stitching exhibits hand repair along the bottom seam while others seams are tight and strong.  Cloth shows major thinning and fraying at both side panels and at the outer surfaces. Material is strong and tight on the top and backside of canteen.  Also, specimen has two, tin sling loops soldered at each side of the canteen to secure the sling (missing). The two equal compartments, each serviced with its own pewter spouts still intact, might have held medicinal spirits as well as be filled with water. In very good condition, this totally unmarked canteen features seams that are all soldered and still remain tight and strong. The body of the canteen has no visible depressions (dents).

This canteen specimen presents a great opportunity to acquire an original, seldom seen, double-spout accoutrement for your collection.
