Ca. 1810-20. Structurally sound, faded blue-green box measuring 5.5" in diameter, 1.5" in width. "W.L.I." (Washington Light Infantry) painted on side in inch-high red lettering. Box exhibits light wear & nicks consistent with age and usage. Leather sling straps present on sides. Missing stopper. Else VG.
Named in honor of George Washington, the Washington Light Infantry was a militia unit established in Charleston, SC., in 1807. It and its companion unit, the Washington Light Artillery, served in the War of 1812, Mexican War, Civil War [Confederacy], WWI, and WWII, and is still in existence. Superb collectible for Charlestonians & "Washington Light" aficionados.
