This is a group of five Civil War medical insignia to include a pair of Hospital Steward chevrons, a pair of Medical Cadet insignia and a single Caduceus in an oval.

The hospital steward chevrons are of green wool cut in a rectangle with slanted ends. At center is a medical caduceus done in gold bullion thread that is in excellent condition. This is flanked on each side by a straight line border of gold bullion thread outlined with dead bullion. The dead bullion outline is slightly crooked in areas and on one chevron it is missing from one side on one of the borders. Otherwise the chevrons are in excellent condition. They meas. approx. 9.25 inches long by 2.50 inches wide. At one time the backs were covered with a black paper type material but most of that is missing.

Next is a pair of Medical Cadet insignia. These are of green wool and are rectangular measuring approx. 4.00 by 1.50 inches. They have a border of dead bullion with a central device of a gold bullion thread bar. The green wool and the bullion are in excellent condition however there is some waviness in the dead bullion border. Backs are plain and uncovered.

Last in the group is a wonderful gold bullion thread caduceus inside a dead bullion oval sewn on to a green wool backing that meas. approx. 2 3/8 by 3.50 inches. All the bullion is excellent and the green wool shows only light wear. The back has a brown buckram like material with the remains of a black paper exterior cover.

Civil War medical insignia is rare in its own right and to encounter this complete a set in such fine condition is an even greater rarity.  [AD]
